Reimagining Thomas Harris’ trilogy

The Hannibal Lecter series is one of the most iconic pieces of literature produced in recent history, made even more iconic by the motion picture adaptation of Silence of the Lambs. This is a reimagining of the book covers of the series written by Harris.

THE CHALLENGE

The aim of this project was to reimagine book covers of a series, either of the same genre or titles penned by the same author. Thomas Harris’ Hannibal series seemed like one that could have a uniform and cohesive theme that could be applied to all three books in the series.

THE WORK

The Hannibal series has been redesigned using the concept of the Rorschach test. Since Hannibal Lecter is a psychiatrist, this concept seemed most apt, as using food or body parts as concepts are quite overused. Each cover reflects the main theme of each book in the series.

Rorschach Test Scans

The Rorschach tests were created by splattering ink down the middle of paper and then folded to create a symmetrical print. Black and red ink were used in this case, the color black signifying the dark and twisted soul of Lecter and the red being suggestive of blood. These prints were later scanned and then edited in Photoshop to create the images for the covers.
